How Do I Know if My Foundation is Damaged?
Examine your house carefully. You can determine if you have foundation damage.
Here is a checklist for you to follow:
Inside Your House
- Check all interior walls for cracks.
- Check corners of windows and doors for cracks and signs of separation.
- Check wall-to-wall and wall-to-ceiling joints for cracks and signs of separation.
- Check walls for nails “popping” out of wallboard.
- Raise and lower windows in each room and check for signs of binding.
- Open and shut all interior doors and check for signs of binding.
Outside Your House
- Check corners of windows and doors on for cracks and signs of separation.
- Check bricks and mortar for diagonal cracks.
- Check exposed concrete at the base of the house for cracks.
- Measure distance of trees to outside of house. Trees should be as far away from the house as its mature height.
- Check for proper drainage around house during a rain. There should be no standing water up against the house.
- Check gutters and downspouts for proper drainage. All water should drain away from the house.
